Following a presentation at the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) the editor of ‘Solar Progress” magazine, Dr. Bill Parker and President AuSES WA, Garry Baverstock have launched a Solar Mentors Programme.

Solar Mentor Dr. Bill Parker
The Solar Mentors Programme has been fortunate to gain the services of former WA Office of Energy chief, Dr Mary Dale who has structured the program and produced guidelines on how it will function. Academics at the Western Australian universities of Notre Dame, Edith Cowan University, Central Metro TAFE, University of Western Australia, Curtin University and Murdoch University have shown a genuine level of interest.
Members of AIA are being asked to
1. Tell young professionals and students about the event
2. Apply to become a solar mentor or nominate someone who would be suitable
3. Attend the Solar Mentors Programme “Solar Beers” social launch event and support the initiative on the day.
Solar Mentors Programme – Solar Beers Event
November 16th @ 6.00 pm The Windsor Hotel, South Perth

Snippets of renewable energy news from around the world:
Solar Power Supports Mongolian Villages
Solar-e.com supports assisting third world countries to move away from dependence on fossil fuels and invites comments on its blog. Remote villages in Mongolia are definitely places that could use clean energy to help in providing power for daily needs. Kyocera recently installed a decent amount of solar power in two villages in this nation through the World Bank’s Renewable Energy for Rural Access Project, calling what it did “among the largest stand-alone solar power generating systems in the world.” by Nino Marchetti, October 30th, 2010
Introduction to Renewable Energy Technologies: Berlin, Germany
Solar-e.com supports professional development in renewable energy technologies – see www.solar-e.com for details of programmes. This Berlin-based course offers a comprehensive overview of the main commercially viable renewable technologies and an understanding of how they work. It covers the design of renewable energy systems and the appropriateness of different technologies.
Event Date: November 2, 2010 – 09:00 – November 4, 2010 – 18:00 Schönhauser Allee 10-1, Berlin, 10119 Germany

Climate Finance 2010 London, England
Solar-e.cm lists information on funding for projects that will mitigate the effects of Climate Change on www.solar-e.com site. One of the expected benefits from the Cancun Climate meetings is funding for projects that will make positive changes to reducing the effects of Climate Change in the future. This London conference will examine the development of these projects, and the role of “Carbon Markets 2.0″ in creating low-carbon technology deployment opportunities.

Advanced New Technology – Making Solar Generated Electricity Cheaper than Fossil Fuels: Australia
Solar-e.com is delighted to learn that CSIRO Australia will install 450 large mirrors( heliostats) for Australia’s largest solar-thermal tower system at the CSIRO National Solar Energy Centre in Newcastle, NSW. The heliostats are part of an advanced new solar technology developed by CSIRO.
The organisation aims to make solar generated electricity at the same cheaper cost than fossil fuel generated electricity, when the cost of carbon is taken into account.Creating 2.4 x 1.8m panels of glass mirrors for a solar field is no easy feat. The glass needs to be a specific concave shape to achieve a highly accurate reflection point and strong enough to withstand extreme weather events. Once installed, the heliostats will concentrate the sun’s rays to create temperatures of up to 1000°C. SolarThermal Magazine
