SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENTS

Successful investing is based on a number or parameters, not least is the need to have a sound strategy and reliable sources of research or advice. Investments which are great successes in one year may be duds in the next. The investor must remain vigilant and be satisfied that they are getting the right advice from their own research or from responsible professionals who have their interests and goals at heart.

How to find the right investment or right adviser? Unfortunately there is no magic button, but to help you research a range of ethical, environmentally responsible investments, a number of publications and associations who specialize in the area of ethical and socially responsible investing, are set out in the investors section.

Be prepared to ask questions and demand information from any target investment company or managed fund, to ensure that their ethical and governance issues are in line with your expectations.

Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is when social, environmental or ethical considerations are taken into account in the selection of an investment. SRI integrates personal values and societal concerns (such as social, ethical and environmental values, many of which give rise to binding legal obligations) with investment decisions. SRI considers both the investor’s financial needs and an investment’s impact on society.

Social investors include individuals and institutions such as corporations, universities, hospitals, unions, foundations, insurance companies, pension funds, nonprofit organizations, churches and synagogues.
