Low Energy Buildings in Australia

LEBIAbook2DATA SHEET DOWNLOADS

Each set of Data Sheets covers one Australian State or Territory and all climatic zones within that State/Territory.

You can achieve specialized knowledge by following the simple, clear and concise instructions. Although the data sheets are created for architects, designers and builders, you don’t need to be a designer to understand the principles involved.

Explanations are easy to understand and the data sheets include not only the full range of climate zones in Australia, but the particular locations and orientations of buildings within each climate zone. Couldn’t be easier !

EXAMPLE:

Region B3 (Sub-Tropical) Port Hedland, House facing South

Using the data sheets for a building in the above location facing south, provides designers with sun cut-off angles of each facade for various times of the day, glass collection areas in m2 plus the ratio of glass to wall, thermal mass storage requirements, Insulation values required and even recommends the correct sizes of fans.

TESTIMONIAL: Proof that it works!

Using the techniques, information and low energy principles outlined in this design manual I was able to build two award winning solar passive houses within a family compound (www.eco-development.com/ecocompound). Five years later we are still enjoying the significant benefits of comfort, health, low energy use and financial savings that flow from living in well designed energy efficient homes.

Having an even temperature throughout the seasons means no more cold bathrooms in winter but cool comfortable rooms even on a hot summer’s day. We have plenty of natural light and with Tecto pergolas shading our windows, can avoid harsh summer sunlight.

Years after moving in we still appreciate the way windows were positioned to take advantage of breezes. No wonder visitors are always impressed.  I wouldn’t build another house without ensuring the  architect, builder or designer understands all the elements outlined in this manual.”

Whether you are a designer or architect, your data sheet download will enable you to produce solar buildings that are cost effective and that really work. If you don’t incorporate these design principles into all your buildings in the future, you will lose ground. Legislation is forcing you to think about energy efficiency in buildings and unless you prepare yourself, others will take your place.

The sad fact is that the vast majority of building designers and architects do not have the specific scientific knowledge needed to create well designed energy efficient buildings that really work! Even some of the best professionals are not proficient at designing solar passive buildings. Just because someone is skilled at design and has taken a one day course in environmental design principles doesn’t mean his skills automatically translate into effective low energy building design.

The Australian continent has been divided into twenty three climatic regions, classified into four latitude zones. The regions have been defined into broad areas of macroclimates relating to temperature, radiation, rainfall and humidity, broadly classified within each state border.

Authors Garry Baverstock MRAIA, AM and Sam Paolino, ARAIA have pooled their considerable knowledge to develop computer programmes for calculating sun data and daylighting in building design. Garry has spent years educating the architectural and building profession on climate sensible building and even received the Order of Australia for his services to education and the environment.
